Stella McCartney launches sustainable capsule "We are the Weather"

03 February 2020

Stella McCartney is collaborating with renowned environmental author Jonathan Safran Foer on a capsule collection that forms part of the wider Spring 2020 collection, entitled "Force for Nature".

The capsule collection is named after Foer’s recently released novel about the climate crisis titled "We are the Weather", and features pieces adorned with statements like "we are entirely free to live differently" across men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, knitwear and accessories.

The "We are the Weather" capsule collection is brought to life with prints that feature handwritten messages from Foer, radiating from a graphic sun illustration. In knitwear, two regenerated cashmere sweaters printed with the "SOS" motif from Stella McCartney's Winter 2019 show are the simplest take on this theme, while two oversized, high-neck sweaters covered in impactful graphics are a bolder take.

The fabrics used in the capsule collection follow Stella McCartney's previous innovative methods of production, aimed at having less of an impact on the planet, including:

ORGANIC COTTON – cotton that is grown (for at least three years) without the use of toxic and persistent pesticides, synthetic fertilisers, or genetic engineering. Organic cotton farming uses water efficiently, does not involve harmful chemicals, restores and maintains soil health.

ORGANIC LINEN – Linen is a durable natural fibre derived from the flax plant, which can be cultivated and processed without chemicals when grown organically. It can also be grown on marginal land that is unsuitable for food crop production.

REGENERATED CASHMERE – regenerated cashmere comes from pre-consumer textile waste, meaning that it is waste that is created during the production process. This waste is sorted, mechanically recycled, and spun into a beautiful regenerated yarn in Italy.

"We are the Weather" by Stella McCartney launches today, 3 February 2020.
