Stella McCartney has unveiled a unisex collaborative collection with Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara, featuring a childlike character with a large head and doll-size body, and buzzwords such as "We Are Punks".

The Spring/Summer 2021 collection is described as a "post-gender capsule" with conscious urban pieces blended with laidback luxury and a utilitarian wearability.

The legendary Japanese artist will launch his first-ever fashion collaboration, setting the collection's tone by reinterpreting his iconic style alongside Stella’s Old Bond Street logo.

The collection includes ready-to-wear pieces and accessories including graphic coordinated silk sets, organic cotton tops emblazoned with his illustrations and rallying phrases, hoodies and joggers accented with logo taping, vegan leather trousers and shorts.

TheIndustry.fashion has created a gallery with images from the collection's promotional campaign:

Knitwear is also prominent in the capsule collection, with organic cotton yarn cardigans and crewneck jumpers with logo patches in contrast stitching. Slightly oversized recycled cashmere crewnecks feature subtle cut-out details, with pale coral, mint and yellow colourways being the standout styles.

Nearly every item has an eco-friendly element, with carryover materials including organic cotton, forest-friendly viscose, recycled cashmere and traceable wool. Deliberately timeless in design, the pieces are designed to be worn over a long peri – reducing the need to buy more and creating less waste; true sustainability.

Speaking about the new collection, Stella McCartney said: “Today’s youth are naturally open-minded and fluid with gender. Their punk attitude towards the status quo directly inspired my collaboration with living legend Yoshitomo Nara. Much like his artwork, this generation is using self-expression to affect social change.”

Yoshitomo Nara added: “When I see young people who have an opinion on things in the world that they think are wrong, fight for what they believe in like Greta Thunberg and the solidarity of those individuals, I have a huge respect for them and admire their spirit of not relying on adults and capital. And I want to be a part of it.”

The collection is available now on Stella McCartney's website, with the items expected to be stocked in selected stores once non-essential retail has reopened.
