SS19 trend to go: Stripe story

Sandra Halliday
16 September 2018

If it’s summer, it must be … a stripe trend. Yes, we know that stripes and sunshine go together like a British summer and cloud cover (come on, you can’t believe that the summer just gone is going to be repeated any time soon, can you?).

For summer 2019, labels seem to be stripe-aholic but if you think that means same-old-same-old, you’re mistaken. Designers are playing around with stripes for the new season cutting them in counter directions and working them in beads or lace, combining them with graphics or creating matte-sheen or solid/sheer contrasts.

The most powerful strand running through all these looks has a relaxed edge and sees stripes combined with hi-low hems or asymmetric cuts, and wrap effects that reveal as much as they conceal. The clever cuts serve to emphasise the contrast of stripes running vertically, diagonally and horizontally all at once.

These work well in muted bi- or tri-colour combos, offering up an almost homespun look for summer holiday (and festival) dressing or a more conservative edge for 9-to-5 office wear. But they also come as technicolour dream-stripes, helping to drive an offbeat edge into occasion dressing or simply acting as a mood elevator for those summer days when the sun just won’t shine.
