Shein seeks Turkish suppliers following supply chain criticism

Shein is planning to source clothes for its European market in Turkey as the business attempts to reduce criticism of its use of Chinese labour.

The Chinese e-commerce giant is looking at using suppliers that are closer to some of its main markets after receiving backlash amid its plans for a floatation on the London Stock Exchange, according to This is Money.

It comes after Shein confidentially filed papers with the FCA last month, meaning a potential listing could happen before the end of the year.

Although, some backlash from politicians, the press, other retailers and investors is said to have rattled Chinese officials, with the fast fashion retailer said to be also eyeing a listing in Hong Kong as a back-up plan.

The British Fashion Council also shared its concerns over London Stock Exchange float, saying the listing was a "significant concern" to the industry and that "questions remain" about its business practices.

Critics say Shein uses suppliers in China who exploit low-paid garment workers, allowing it to sell its clothes at knockdown prices.

However, Shein recently told the Financial Times: "Shein has a zero-tolerance policy for forced labour. We take visibility across our entire supply chain seriously and we are committed to respecting human rights.

"We require our contract manufacturers to only source cotton from approved regions. We pay manufacturing suppliers competitive rates so they can pay fair wages to their workers."
