Shaftesbury to introduce temporary road closures in Seven Dials to help retailers

London landlord Shaftesbury is working with Camden Council to pedestrianise Seven Dials with temporary timed road closures from 3 August to help retailers, restaurants, bars and cafés as they continue to reopen.

The move is part of a programme of initiatives to support tenants, welcome back the community and inspire visitors to return safely to the iconic village in heart of London’s West End.

The timed closures will be in core daytime trading hours – operating from 10am – 6pm, seven days a week.

In addition, Shaftesbury is implementing a one-way system for pedestrians visiting Neal’s Yard and is installing additional cycle parking throughout the estate.

Shaftesbury is also in discussion with Camden Council to allow food and beverage operators to utilise Seven Dials’ newly pedestrianised streets to provide additional external seating areas to boost visitor appeal.

As part of the new initiative, Shaftesbury is working in collaboration with an artist to add vibrancy to the traffic-free streets with a series of bold and bright works located throughout Seven Dials.

Charles Owen, portfolio executive at Shaftesbury, commented: “The timed road closures in Seven Dials are a significant step in helping all our restaurants, bars, cafés and retailers rebuild as the lockdown eases and footfall begins to grow. The combination of open-air streets and, in effect, wider footways, will make Seven Dials an even safer and more enjoyable experience for visitors and residents.

“We have worked closely with Camden Council to devise the plans, which received very strong support from members and officers. While the Camden community, its businesses and residents are facing challenges, working together like this will help ensure everyone thrives once again.”

The news follows the announcement Shaftesbury is moving to monthly rents across its portfolio, while many of Seven Dials’ shops, restaurants, cafés and bars have begun reopening their doors.
