Selfridges unveils its Christmas windows

Selfridges has unveiled the Christmas windows as its Oxford Street flagship depicting Santa getting up to all sorts of "magical mischief" on his "wild and wonderful" Alpine adventures.

The department store commissioned a special sequin suit for Santa to wear in the displays with each one taking 193 hours to produce. Five of the windows come complete with an accompanying soundtrack which is played by a special speaker that uses the glass to convey sound.

A beautiful mountain scape provides the backdrop for each window, which was painted by one of Selfridges' Bright Young Things alumni, set designer Clementine Keith-Roach. They are based on real mountains, such as Everest and The Matterhorn.

As ever Selfridges' window design team went to great lengths with their props visiting a ski reclamation yard to source winter sports kit and using a fan to pump air into an inflatable parachute to fly above santa's head. In total 90 disco balls are used across the windows.

"It's been so much fun thinking up all the different scenarios for Santa to be partying in. We're constantly adding little details to make sure everyone who sees them chuckles - there is a lot of humour this year," said chief window designer Morag Hickmott.
