Selfridges doubles its Buying Better sustainable labelling scheme

Selfridges has doubled the scope of its Buying Better sustainable labelling scheme to help consumers make more conscious purchases across fashion, beauty and homewares.

Six new labels have been added to the scheme, which was unveiled in 2017, covering: responsible leather; reducing waste; vegan; forest friendly; cruelty free; and supporting communities. Now more than 3,000 items and 100 brands online and in-store, including Stella McCartney, Ganni and Calvin Klein, carry a Buying Better label.

“We know our customers care more than ever about the products they buy and they want clear information from us about them,” said Selfridges sustainability director Daniella Vega.

“With just 10 years left to secure a sustainable future, collaboration – from working with our brands to create products which are better for people and the planet, to being part of cross-industry coalitions such as the Fashion Pact of which we are a founding signatory – is key to achieving the level of change we need to see.”

The expansion of the scheme comes as research conducted by Selfridges found that 74% of consumers think retailers could do more to educate them on making more sustainable choices.

Its study also found that 57% of British shoppers expected more action from luxury retailers, compared to those on the high street, when it came to tackling sustainability.
