Selfridges was awarded with Retailer of the Year, and Lady Carole Bamford received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the first ever Positive Luxury Awards ceremony, held at the Kimpton Fitzroy Hotel in London’s Bloomsbury last night.

Selfridges was awarded Retailer of the Year for developing science-based targets to ensure it achieves net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. The retailer has shown leadership in removing single-use plastics in packaging and products. Selfridges Group Managing Director, Anne Pitcher, and Selfridges Group Director of Sustainability, Daniella Vega, were there to receive the award.

Lady Carole Bamford received the Lifetime Achievement Award for her ongoing commitment to social and environmental sustainability. Rupert Adams picked up the Business Leader of the Year Award for Swarovski, and other winners included Candiani Denim, which won the Innovation of the Year Award, Stay Wild Swim was awarded the Breakthrough Brand of the Year Award, and Linde Werdelin picked up the Circular Economy of the Year Award.

Guests at the ceremony included Lord and Lady Bamford, Stephen Webster, Christopher Raeburn, Bay Garnet, Ronan and Storm Keating, Alice Temperley, Anya Hindmarch, Hum Fleming, Anastasia and Amy Webster.

The awards are a global celebration of sustainability and innovation within the luxury industry and recognise companies or individuals that are working towards affecting positive change in businesses and the world.

Diana Verde Nieto, Co-founder of Positive Luxury, said: “We are so pleased with the success of the first edition of the Positive Luxury Awards. It was an incredible celebration of the luxury brands that are truly making a difference. Congratulations to all the winners, and every brand that is doing their part to make a positive impact on our world."

Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Lady Carole Bamford OBE, wife of JCB chairman Lord Anthony Bamford, who founded the Bamford brand of women’s clothing, accessories and skincare products, as well as the Daylesford Organic Farmshops chain, commented: “It is a great honour to have been recognised in this way, particularly by an organisation that is doing so much to promote and support sustainable and ethical business practice.

“I feel enormously proud to find myself among a community in which individuals and companies are doing such innovative and pioneering work to forge a better future for our planet.”

On Bamford’s award, Verde Nieto added: “Carole Bamford has been a champion of sustainable and mindful living for more than 40 years, and she believes that collective action is what will help us protect nature. She is a visionary in organic farming, and a promoter of natural beauty, as well as sustainably produced luxury garments that highlight skilled artisanal work.

“We are so pleased to celebrate Carole’s success in affecting change and enabling others to live and shop more consciously and present her with the Lifetime Achievement Award.”

Selfridges was also praised for working to educate its customers. In June 2019, it launched a Beauty Booth that focussed on refillable, packaging-free beauty, and it banned disposable wipes in its beauty halls.

On Selfridges’ award, Verde Nieto commented: “Selfridges has made massive strides over the past year, beating their 2020 carbon reduction target, phasing out exotic skins and continuing their work to become plastic-free. We are delighted to present them with the Retailer of the Year Award in recognition of these achievements.”
