Schuh resumes trading online

Footwear chain Schuh has resumed trading online having suspended its e-commerce operations due to what it said was conflicting advice from the Scottish and UK Governments over working practices during the COVID-19 crisis.

The Livingston-headquartered business ceased trading online on 26 March saying that while the UK Government had said that "non-essential" e-commerce trading could continue this conflicted with advice about non-key workers being encouraged to stay at home.

However the company said it had now made the decision to resume trading online after consulting with staff and clarifying its position saying the ability to keep trading was "critical to preserve our business and is based upon government guidelines, which have also been endorsed by the Retail Consortium."

CEO Colin Temple said: “Schuh has gone above and beyond to comply with government health and safety hygiene practice and deliver extensive welfare procedures within our fulfilment operation. We have been overwhelmed by positivity from our Schuh community and we reopen with the continued goodwill and support of our Schuh employees. We want to work together to support our business throughout this crisis.”

Most fashion retailers are continuing to trade online with some restrictions, such as longer delivery times, in order that staff can be properly socially distanced in warehouses. However others have suspended trading both on- and offline including Next, Fenwick and Net-A-Porter.
