In a Q1 trading statement released today, for the 16 weeks to 26 June 2021, Sainsbury’s said sales are “ahead of expectations”, with year-on-year sales of its Tu clothing brand up 57.6% and full price sales up 95%.

Clothing sales were also 15.5% up on the equivalent period in pre-pandemic 2019, while the supermarket reported strong growth in seasonal and womenswear ranges, and “gained market share on both a value and volume basis.”

Total Q1 year-on-year retail sales (excluding fuel) increased by 1.6%, and were up 10.3% on 2019. With the strong sales growth, the supermarket now expects underlying full year profit before tax of at least £660m.

Simon Roberts, Chief Executive of J Sainsbury plc, said: “Our colleagues are doing a brilliant job of giving great customer service and continuing to adapt as restrictions ease and shopping habits change.

“Over the coming months we expect to see customer shopping patterns normalise further and we are well set up to serve them however they want to shop.

We are focused on offering our customers even better value and regularly creating new and exciting products for them to try.”
