Sainsbury's tasks new Clothing Managing Director Ben Smith to revamp Tu
Sainsbury's has appointed Ben Smith, Matalan's former Chief Trading Officer, as its Clothing Managing Director to lead Tu.
A Sainsbury’s spokesperson told TheIndustry.fashion: "We’re pleased to be welcoming Ben Smith to Sainsbury’s later this year, to take up the role of Clothing Managing Director. Ben brings substantial clothing retail experience and will be an excellent addition to the business. He will report to Rhian Bartlett, Chief Commercial Officer."
Smith joined Matalan in March 2023 as Interim Buying and Merchandising Director, subsequently being appointed Chief Trading Officer Officer just two months later. Before stepping down in January, he led the company's transformation, overseeing Commercial Strategies for over £1bn turnover in Clothing and Home. He has also previously held Trading Director roles at British retailers Pep&Co and Primark.

Back in January, Sainsbury's reported its 'biggest ever' Christmas. General merchandise and clothing sales increased by 3.4%, reflecting significant improvements in range and availability.
The company said it was on track to meet its profit guidance for the year as a result, telling shareholders its retail underlying operating profits are likely to be towards the middle of its £1.01 billion to £1.06 billion range.
Sainsbury's Tu goes head to head with George at Asda, which recently teamed up with Erica Davies and Kat Farmer respectively. Earlier this month, it launched its first-ever bridesmaid collection online. Starting from £24 for the ‘twist-neck’ dress to £32 for the ‘multiway’ dress, the emphasis is on affordability.
