Rixo launches new sustainable collection

British contemporary womenswear brand, Rixo has launched a new sustainable capsule collection, which offers “consciously creative, one-off, original pieces that will last.”

"Rixo Recycle" is the brand's very first sustainable collection and consists of 10 pieces made in a female-owned factory in India. The designs have been created from recyclable materials and fabric off-cuts.

Some designs in the collection are limited to just 1 or 2 pieces, whilst others have 50 pieces, as the brand explained each piece as “completely unique” and as the range is made from fabric off-cuts.

The capsule collection feature Rixo’s best selling silhouettes including the ‘Marilyn’, ‘Tamara’ and ‘Ariel’ and consists of blouses, T-shirts, and skirts.

A new range of dresses is also available, including mini styles ‘Christina’ and ‘Camila’ and maxi silhouettes ‘Coral’, ‘Lauren’ and ‘Silvia’, all available in frilled collars, pleated skirts and ruffled hemlines in a range of turquoise, crimson and emerald shades.

Rixo co-founder, Orlagh Mccloskey, said in a statement: “On a trip to India I saw the prints lying there and in my almost magpie spirit I questioned what they were, to my absolute shock I was told that all the fabric was to be destroyed so I gathered them immediately and asked if we could utilise them into some special Rixo garments."

“Knowing each piece couldn’t be replicated our factory manager was slightly worried but I just told them to make what they could, hence some items being so limited and simply only 2 units being made.”

Rixo co-founder, Henrietta Rix, added: “The historic process of woodblock printing is being eradicated by digital printing so we are so pleased to present this next collection. To create these patterns."

"Indian ladies by hand carefully prepared individual woodblocks by cutting away wood with a knife, chisel, or sandpaper leaving the pattern. It is necessary only to ink the block and bring it into firm and even contact with the cloth to achieve an acceptable print, which takes years of practice.”

Rixo has created its new sustainable collection in a bid to become more environmentally conscious. As well as the collection using recyclable and off-cut materials, the brand has also focused on using low impact manufacturing and reduced transportation as part of the design process.

The new "Rixo Recycle" collection will be available exclusively online and in the brand's London store.
