Savile Row tailor Richard James, a long-time friend and customer of Sir Elton John, is to put on an in-store exhibition this week, along with Swarovski, to celebrate the release of the biographical film “Rocketman”.

Five signature looks will be displayed in the Richard James Savile Row store to coincide with the "Rocketman" UK premiere on 20 May 2019, and will be on show for 3-4 weeks.

The aim is to put a touch of theatre back in to retail and, as well as original outfits from Sir Elton John’s career, there will also be a Yamaha C3 PE grand piano on show.

Bespoke Swarovski-crystallised tailcoats were part of Sir Elton John’s glittering wardrobe for his "The Million Dollar Piano" residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, which ran from 2011 to 2018.

Sir Elton John said: “I remember the first time I met Richard. I’d popped into the Joseph men’s shop and was bowled over by the most striking sunflower ties. I flipped them over to see the eponymous label: ‘Richard James SavileRow’. Savile Row?! I hadn’t seen anything this fresh in years. Naturally, I got the address and headed there immediately.”

The exhibition will feature the “Dot” collection, comprising of two-piece suits and shirts. Sir Elton John wore the pink and yellow dots look for his 2001 Grammy Awards performance with US rapper Eminem.

Sean Dixon, founder and managing director of Richard James, commented: “Sir Elton has got great individual style and he’s never been afraid to express himself, so he represents a lot of what Richard James is all about. He’s been an incredibly supportive friend and a customer since we opened our first store in 1992.”

Nadja Swarovski, a member of the Swarovski Executive Board, added: “We are thrilled to co-curate this inspirational fashion showcase, which celebrates our long history of collaboration with Sir Elton John and our partnership with costume designer Julian Day on the costumes for ‘Rocketman.’

“Our crystals have been adding signature sparkle to Sir Elton’s wardrobe for decades, and it is a pleasure to see them shining in Richard James’s fine Savile Row setting.”

To celebrate the exhibition, Richard James has also created a limited run of eight T-shirts, all featuring a Swarovski crystal rocket emblem. The T-shirts will retail at £175 and will be available in-store only.

Richard James has recently received investment from UK developer Charles S Cohen, opened a store in New York, and has plans to expand in Asia.
