Retailers are at loggerheads with landlords over rent cuts and holidays, as looming bills threaten efforts to keep stores open and workers in jobs.

Quarterly rents that can run to millions of pounds are due on Tuesday. Those who run non-food sites are under increasing financial strain as shoppers have stopped spending on most things but groceries because of coronavirus. They also face mass closures as the outbreak spreads.

Retailers argue that landlords have fewer fixed overheads such as rent and chunky wage bills.
