Retail sales set to surge on "Super Saturday"

Christmas is going to be coming late for retailers, with an estimated 10.1m shoppers set to hit the high street this Saturday 22 December, spending £1.38bn instore.

Coined “Super Saturday” in research carried out by VoucherCodes and the Centre of Retail Research (CRR), a further 4.8m shoppers are expected to shop online, spending another £268m. The total spend across both instore and online is estimated at £1.65bn.

That will follow on from “Frenzied Friday”, when some 10.3m shoppers are expected in stores, and 7.2m online, with a total spend across both channels at £1.23bn.

Express delivery options are also going to spike as the big day gets closer, but many won’t risk not receiving their online purchases in time and will head to the shops for a supposed "Super Saturday" shopping bonanza.

With heavy pre-Christmas discounting already rife, the deals to be had will be too great for many to resist. Clothes, perfume and chocolate top the last-minute gift list.

Any last-minute uptick in sales will be welcome after retailers endured one of the worst Novembers in recent years.
