Retail Recap: Fashion's key appointments in June 2022

June has been an important month for appointments and movements in the fashion industry, with several retail giants appointing a new CEO or Managing Director.

Footfall across all UK retail destinations surging by 45.6% over the extended Jubilee weekend, Platinum Jubilee celebrations and the sunny weather were unable to outweigh the worsening cost of living crisis.

Despite the cost of living crisis, the fashion industry has continued to move ahead and progress with business moves - TheIndustry.fashion has listed the crucial moves in June 2022.

ASOS appoints José Ramos Calamonte as CEO and Jørgen Lindemann as Chairman.

ASOS announced the appointment of José Ramos Calamonte as Chief Executive Officer and Jørgen Lindemann as Chairman. Ramos Calamonte is an experienced international retailer, with deep multichannel experience and a track record of driving innovation. In an 18-year career in retail, he has led on commercial strategy for high-profile brands including Inditex, Esprit and Carrefour Spain. Ramos Calamonte has already taken over as CEO.

Jørgen Lindemann, who joined the ASOS Board as a non-executive director on 1 November 2021, will become Chairman, succeeding Ian Dyson, with effect from 1 August 2022.

New Look appoints Helen Connolly as Chief Executive Officer

New Look confirmed that Chief Commercial Officer Helen Connolly will immediately take over as CEO. She replaces Nigel Oddy who stood down from the role this month after three years as CEO.

Connolly joined the high street fashion retailer in January 2020 and had previouslt served as CEO at fashion chain Bonmarché. Prior to Bonmarché, she was Director of Buying, Womenswear and Lingerie, for George at ASDA, and also Head of Buying at Dorothy Perkins.

Nitin Passi returns as Missguided CEO after Frasers Group acquisition

Nitin Passi, the founder of Missguided, returned as its CEO following the recent acquisition by Frasers Group. Passi founded Missguided in 2009 and originally announced in April 2022 that it was time for him to step down from his "day-to-day leadership" as the business "explores strategic partnership options."

Swarovski names Alexis Nasard as the family-owned company’s first external CEO

Luxury Swiss crystal company Swarovski has named Alexis Nasard as its first CEO to come from outside the Swarovski family in the brand’s 127-year history, effective 4 July 2022.

With over 30 years experience in fast moving consumer goods and consumer packaged goods (FMCG CPG) and in fashion and retail, Nasard spent 17 years at Proctor & Gamble, six years at Heineken, and five years at Bata.

Valentino names Alessandro Beretta CEO Europe

Maison Valentino has tapped Alessandro Beretta as Chief Executive Officer for Europe, leading the Italian luxury label’s European retail and wholesale growth.

He will leverage on Valentino’s digital capabilities and build out relationships with couture clients. His appointment will help with the implementation of its Client and Colleague Centric strategy, support digital transformation and Couture Clienteling to offer an optimal Client Journey.

Diesel names Eraldo Poletto as new global CEO

Diesel announced the appointment of Eraldo Poletto as its new global CEO, effective from tomorrow, 1 July 2022.

Currently CEO of Diesel North America, Poletto has also held other CEO positions at Stuart Weitzman, Salvatore Ferragamo and Furla. Poletto will take over from Massimo Piominini, who joined Diesel in December 2019 to design and implement a strategy and repositioning plan for the brand.

END appoints Parker Gundersen as new CEO

Luxury streetwear and sportswear retailer END has appointed Parker Gundersen as its new CEO to oversee its “next phase of growth”, succeeding founders Christiaan Ashworth and John Parker, who “will remain in key positions” on the board of directors.

Gundersen was formerly President of Retail Operations at LVMH subsidiary DFS Group, and has also been the CEO of ZALORA, a leading fashion e-commerce player in Asia. He has over 20 years of multinational leadership experience spanning retail, luxury goods, e-commerce and strategy consulting.

Boohoo Group poaches Shaun McCabe from Trainline as new CFO

Boohoo Group announced the appointment of travel operator Trainline’s Shaun McCabe as its new CFO.

McCabe has been CFO at Trainline since 2016, though he has been part of Boohoo Groups board as a Non-Executive Director since November 2020, as is currently Chair of the Audit and Risk Committees.

Moose Knuckles bolsters leadership team with three new hires

Canadian outerwear specialist Moose Knuckles strengthened its leadership team with three new appointments. Josh Puritz joins as Head Merchant, Julia Yu joins as Senior Director of Collaborations, and Katherine Correia comes in as VP of Product Development.

Along with the Moose Knuckles design team, they will lead global teams “toward excellence in execution in channel merchandising strategies”, product development and customer experience improvements.

John Lewis appoints Queralt Ferrer as Director of Design for Fashion

John Lewis named Queralt Ferrer as its first Director of Design for Fashion, as the retailer aims to become a "more significant player in fashion and home."

An experienced Global Design and Creative Director, Queralt is responsible for the launch of the Massimo Dutti fashion brand and led the company’s growth over a 17 year period. She was previously the Director of Design for Marks & Spencer Womenswear and Lingerie and was credited for her work in redefining the brand and collection strategy to consolidate market leadership.

Reiss appoints former Flannels buyer Ben Hurren as Head of Brand Buying

Reiss announced the appointment of former Flannels Head of Menswear Elevation, Ben Hurren, in a newly created role of Head of Brand Buying, as it looks to expand its premium third party offer.

Prior to his role at Flannels, Hurren spent six years at Selfridges where he was Buying Manager Men’s Designer RTW, Accessories and Shoes. His new position at Reiss will see him steer the brand buying across menswear, womenswear and kidswear.

The O2 appoints ex-Sky Marketing Director to 'reimagine the customer experience'

AEG announced the appointment of former Sky Marketing Director Robbie Balfour as Director of Marketing & Brand for London's The O2. Balfour joins AEG with over a decade of marketing experience including Sky Sports and Sky Movies Marketing Director and Head of Marketing for Puma UK and Ireland.
