Resort 17 trends - Bags: Watch out, snakes about!

Sandra Halliday
11 July 2016

Snakeskin has been a key material for several seasons and Resort 2017 is no different… almost. This time the material has morphed from some of the ultra-colour effects of previous seasons into a more natural finish.

But that’s not to say these bags only rely on the beauty of the skins for their impact. Bags are also dressed up with oversized charms, high-impact motifs (like appliqué stars in metallic leathers) or by panels of plain matte leather.

Given the high price of snakeskin, using alternative materials for the shoulder straps (chains or striped webbing are popular this pre-season) both brings down the price and make a style statement at the same time. These contrasting panels and straps aren’t just about cost, of course. They add a new dimension to the snakeskin bag and work well for both daytime office options and evening clutches.

The cost of the material also means it’s unsurprising that it’s mainly for smaller daytime and mini bags rather than pre-season’s giant carryalls. But if interpreted at high street level in faux snakeskins, the material would work just as well for larger bags - think about those snakeskin/matte leather contrasts but scaled-up.

Another alternative that doesn’t rely on excessive use of this pricey material is the snake motif. Alessandro Michele at Gucci has almost made it his signature design in recent seasons and has used it liberally for Resort 2017. His surprisingly simple black shoulder bag is transformed by that signature writhing snake. Just Cavalli has also used the motif (no shocks there given Roberto Cavalli’s long-time love of serpent motifs). Contrasting metallic snakeskin with black leather again helps to transform what would have otherwise been a forgettable design.
