Resort 17 trends - Bags: colourful carryalls

Sandra Halliday

Have you noticed how so many women these days carry two bags? One neat and on the small side, the other bigger, maybe a hide-it-when-you-don’t-need-it Pliage, or a roomy carryall. Well high-end designers are aware of these extremes and for every mini bag they’ve given us this pre-season, there’s a carryall too.

At their most extreme, they’re roomy, even oversized, shoppers, with lots of potential for high street inspiration in a variety of can’t-miss-them prints. Mis Miu went mad for power prints from celestial bodies to oversized gingham checks or shiny stripes with powerful colour contrasts. In doing so, the label that makes much of its profit from its accessories business, pushed the carryall firmly into the fashion spotlight.

And other labels followed suit with mega-bags in florals or the season’s favourite tribal embroideries. All of which is an inspirational gift to the lower-price beach bag/festival bag market.

Not that ultra-decoration is the only direction to follow here. In fact, softer, slouchier, bags work best with little or no decoration and are at him win the office as much as off-duty. Such bags are cut to show off the beauty of high quality suede or matte leather with detail kept more understated. For ALC that means a tonal edging in snakeskin, for Gucci an appliqué animal motif.

But there’s a more structured side to these giant bags too. Taking their direction from luggage, they become like mini suitcases in primary colours or natural-toned leathers covered in the season’s favourite motifs (including the must-have Union Jack).
