Primark has hired former Zara executive Paula Dumont Lopez as its new trading director for womenswear, it has been revealed.

The move, which will be seen by Primark's rivals as a stepping up of its fashion credentials, was revealed by Sky News, which reports that the retailer's CEO Paul Marchant announced the appointment internally earlier this week.

Dumont Lopez was due to join New Look as chief creative officer in the autumn but the move was abandoned in the aftermath of the departure of its former CEO Anders Kristiansen in September, following a poor trading update.

Latterly Dumont Lopez was senior vice president - head of womenswear at Esprit, where she had been since 2013, but prior to that she had spent 10 years at Zara parent Inditex moving up to head of product at Zara Basic.

In her new role she will reportedly have responsibility for all the main functions of Primark's womenswear operation in all of the countries in which it operates.
