Paul Smith to merge men's and women's shows in Paris

Paul Smith has joined the growing number of designers to merge their men's and women's shows. From next season Sir Paul will show both men's and women's collections in Paris on 22 January meaning the show will effectively close Men's Fashion Week and kick-off Couture Week.

Until now Paul Smith has shown his men's line in Paris and his women's line in London but said in a statement that going co-ed (as the men's and women's catwalk merger has been dubbed) was a "natural progression" for his business.

"As an independent business, we can be very agile and address the changes in the evolving market in interesting ways,” he said. “I’m excited to be taking the women’s catwalk show to join the men’s in the heart of Paris to where it all began in the seventies. Exciting times ahead!"

The move follows the brand's decision to merge seven sub-brands into just two labels, the Paul Smith luxury mainline and the more contemporary PS by Paul Smith.

Other big names to go co-ed with their catwalks include Gucci, which will show both men's and women's in Milan from next season and Burberry, which debuted its first joint men's and women's show in London last month.
