Global colour authority Pantone has proclaimed that Living Coral will be the Colour of the Year for 2019, which it describes as “an animating and life-affirming shade of orange with a golden undertone”.
The official reference for the shade is PANTONE 16-1546, it is deemed to be the antidote to the onslaught of digital technology and social media increasingly embedding into daily life.
Living Coral is said to welcome and encourage lighthearted activity and embodies our desire for playful expression. It also represents a need for “authentic and immersive experiences that enable connection and intimacy”.
“Colour is an equalising lens through which we experience our natural and digital realities and this is particularly true for Living Coral,” said Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute. “With consumers craving human interaction and social connection, the humanising and heartening qualities displayed by the convivial Pantone Living Coral hit a responsive chord.”
With the world increasingly concerned about the health of our oceans, the Living Coral shade is also a reminder of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of colour.
“As a shade that affirms life through a dual role of energising and nourishing, Pantone 16-1546 Living Coral reinforces how colours can embody our collective experience and reflect what is taking place in our global culture at a moment in time,” added Pantone Color Institute Vice President Laurie Pressman.
Pantone said we can expect to see Living Coral played out in fashion next year through in more explorative and effervescent in patterns, textures and even monochrome looks, but is also suggests comfort and positivity in more simple colour stories.
“An appealing accent shade, Pantone Living Coral provides a striking contrast across the colour spectrum,” it said.
The Colour of the Year for 2018 has been Ultra Violet, while 2017 was characterised by a fresh green shade, called Greenery.
