Op-ed: And then this happened... GUCCI Menswear!

David Watts
21 January 2016

Yes, I do fully appreciate that it's the current "Holy Grail" of Fashion, but I can no longer hold my tongue about Gucci Menswear!  Following reports from someone at the AW16 Menswear show in Milan this weekend, it would appear that the frenzy of the fashion pack was such that security were on "high" alert!

Apparently even Glen Luchford had to show the door police his photograph to convince them to allow him admittance (according to a source close by).  Yes, the same Glen Luchford who shot the SS16 campaign for GUCCI!  I suspect some poor PR will get a sharp kick for that one!

I have yet to actually see any man (anywhere) actually wearing it! I also strongly suspect that anybody over 35, and those likely to be the people who can afford to buy GUCCI wouldn't be caught dead wearing something that looked like hand-me-downs from vintage shops of the 1970s!

Perhaps the rationale for Kering (parent company) is to sell as many bags, shoes and sunglasses as is possible off the back of the tsunami of editorial hype? 'twas ever thus (and don't get me wrong the accessories are amazing for sure), but can we please rein it in just a little?

According to reports, the third quarter organic sales at GUCCI, which accounts for more than a third of total Kering revenues, fell by 0.4% during the three month period.  So there has been no significant upturn in revenues at GUCCI since the appointment of Alessandro Michele, and the clock is ticking!
