Oliver Spencer: LCM AW16 Review

David Watts
13 January 2016

The starting point for the Oliver Spencer AW16 season was music as inspiration. Founder member of Cream, Ginger Baker travelled to Africa in the 70s and became immersed in the world of Afrobeat, collaborating with African musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Combining the music, cultural flavour and retro 70s vibe Oliver Spencer taps into a nostalgic feeling that translates effortlessly into the retro styling coming through in menswear since last season.

Spencer doesn't stray far from his now well established DNA and why should he, as he has built a very successful brand around it - handcrafted quality, stylish accents and attention to detail. Relaxed tailoring, layering and a casual structure combine with all of those small but key details that set apart this brand from the usual.

The AW16 colour palette is muted with London grey, midnight blue, rust browns punctuated with blood red and ecru. Hand-drawn stripes, potato blocked prints, patchwork and window-pane check are all grounded with textured knitwear that gives a relaxed and desirable effect.

Stand out pieces are the Cerulean blue/red window-pane check topcoat and the patchwork suede Jackets. Mr Everyman - that ordinary individual who easily identifies with the Oliver Spencer brand is also cleverly represented on the catwalk, when Spencer uses non-traditional models, who span age, colour, race and body type - a genius move.

The Oliver Spencer brand has a very loyal and dedicated fanbase, including many celebrity followers, like Jude Law, Idris Elba and Michael Fassbender to name a few. Every product contains the code 51.5222N 00.1185W which are the latitude and longitude coordinates for the Oliver Spencer Design HQ in London's Lamb Conduit Street.

The Lookbook for the AW16 collection is shot by Rankin and features Oliver Spencer customers and fans, Gary Kemp, Allen Leech (Downton Abbey fame), Shay Ola, James Sleaford (Fashion Editor french GQ) and stylist Harris Elliott.
