"Oldest department store" Bennetts to reopen in derby as pop-up

The “world’s oldest department store” Bennetts, which closed in 2019, is set to reopen in Derby as a pop-up store.

Founded in 1734, the shop has rebranded as Seasons by Bennetts, and is due to open on Sadler Gate, in Derby’s historical cathedral quarter, near to its former Irongate home.

The 285-year-old department store was bought out of administration by local businessman Paul Hurst, who owns The Old Bell Hotel in Sadler Gate.

Hurst said he planned to reopen a series of smaller stores, with the first one launching later. He hoped the Irongate store would reopen but the level of works required for the listed building had slowed progress.

Bennetts had been operated by French Sole owner London Sole since April 2019, when it was first bought out of administration.

The heritage department store fell into the hands of administrators within four months after London Sole failed to meet a number of payments.
