NYFW AW20 trends: Get knitting

Sandra Halliday
19 February 2020

Knitwear is always a star story for autumn/winter collections and this season seems to be no different. In New York, designers embraced it as a way to make us feel cosy and cocooned with a look back at traditional forms and an almost-handknit feel for many pieces.

This could be seen in the proliferation of patterned knits where designers hand-craft stylised florals, fair isles or Nordic patterns that had more than touch of Hygge about them.

Chunky sweaters with a nod to Arran styles came in winter whites and creams, soft pales or steel grey with a focus on texture such as traditional cables and other complex patterns. Som elf these pieces were all-encompassing, acting almost as coat replacements.

And that old favourite, the cardigan, made a comeback as a jacket replacement. Simply shaped, with a round neck and boxy shape or in a varsity style, it reflected the trends of the season coming in cables, tweeds, Nordic patterns and cosy yarns.
