Nike is closing stores across the US, Western Europe and other regions to help contain the spread of the Coronavirus, COVID-19.

The sports giant said stores in the US & Canada, Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand would all be closed until 28 March at the earliest. In Italy and France, all non-essential retail has been closed down.

Stores in Japan, South Korea and most of China will remain open as the company makes daily assessments on the spread of the virus.

Nike has around 750 stores globally with just over half of those based in the US. Staff will continue to be paid during the shut down.

In a statement the company said: "The well-being of our teammates and consumers is our top priority so we have decided to close our stores in multiple countries around the world including in the United States, Canada, Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand to limit the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

"These closures will go into effect from Monday, March 16 through Friday, March 27. Customers can continue to shop on Nike.com and on our Nike apps.

"We are taking additional steps in other Nike-managed facilities, including the option to work from home, staggered work schedules, social distancing and additional safety and cleaning steps to help protect and support our teammates."

The move follows that of apparel chain Urban Outfitters, which also includes Anthropologie and Free People, which is closing its stores globally for two weeks from tomorrow.

Elsewhere in the US, ethical footwear retailer Allbirds has closed its stores while athletic apparel specialist, Lululemon, is operating restricted hours.
