Nigerian menswear brand David Wej to open Central London store

Lagos-based menswear brand David Wej is set to open a central London store as it aims to put Nigerian fashion "on the map".

The company will be opening a 1,360 sq ft store on Great Portland Street in the West End selling its signature jacquard suiting, shirts and accessories.

It has been rumoured that the brand was considering a move to London prior to the pandemic and it has not been put off by the lockdowns that have forced many stores to close for good. Indeed it may form part of a new wave of brands coming to the capital to take advantage of the spaces that have become available.

Adedayo Eweje, creative director of David Wej, told the Evening Standard that coming to London was a "natural evolution" and the decision to sign for the store was taken earlier this month: “Covid-19 will soon be a thing of the past and we wanted to be able to better serve our UK and European customers. Post pandemic the fashion landscape will most definitely change and we will be well positioned to respond to the changing appetite that our customers demand.”

Eweje said he was motivated not just by the opportunity to expand the David Wej brand but to "put Nigeria on the global fashion map" and pave the way for other African designers.
