Next's website reached its new daily limit for orders by 8.30am on the first day of re-opening after it was temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The high-street giant re-started e-commerce early this morning with a limited number of products, in the childrenswear and homewares categories, and in limited volumes. It said that once the daily limit of orders was reached, it would close it site and re-start orders the next day.

It has imposed limits on orders to ensure it can achieve rigorous social distancing in its warehouse, where additional safety and hygiene measures have been introduced.

The limit on orders was achieved by 8.30am this morning, which will be encouraging news to Next as it shows demands for its products remains strong and will give it some hope of clearing stock that has built up during the retail shut-down.

When the Government imposed a mandatory shut-down of non-essential retail on 23 March, Next had initially hoped to keep its e-commerce operational but after consulting with staff it decided to temporarily halt orders to introduce new safety measures, which it has now done in consultation with staff and the unions.

Next has said it would introduce more categories to the site in the coming days and weeks but had focused on the most in-demand categories for its re-start.

Footwear retailer Schuh halted its e-commerce operations after the retail shut-down but has since re-opened them while other big names such as Moss Bros and River Island remained closed online. Most other big-name retailers have kept their e-commerce operations open but often with limited capacity.
