New leather brand Billy Tannery set to launch with Kickstarter

Billy Tannery, a new British leather brand founded by two young entrepreneurs, is set to launch this week via a campaign on crowdfunding site Kickstarter.

The brand was established by 28-year-old entrepreneurs Jack Millington and Rory Harker, both from the Midlands, after the pair discovered that due to the decline in the British leather industry and the growth in the goat meat market, thousands of goat hides were going to waste.

Now, having partnered with ethical goat meat supplier Cabrito, Billy Tannery uses the leftover hides to produce premium vegetable tanned kid leather in their new tannery near Northampton. It will launch its Kickstarter fund on 24 May with a range of luxury kid leather bags and accessories that are all designed and handmade in Britain.

The brand claims to be first leather brand of its kind in Britain, with a vertically integrated supply chain from hide to final product and Millington and Harker say they aim to eliminate waste in goat hides while at the same time tapping into the leather heritage of the Midlands.

"After decades of decline, we believe that it is time for some fresh thinking in the British leather industry. We are passionate about taking this unwanted waste product and transforming it into unique and entirely British leather products,” said Millington.

Retail prices for the range start at £80 for a cardholder moving up to £550 for a backpack, however consumers will be able to purchase on Kickstarter from £50 to £440 (early bird offer).
