Mulberry has taken the wraps off its first fully sustainable leather bag, which its made entirely in the UK.

The Portobello tote is made from heavy grain leather sourced “from a gold-rated tannery” and which is a by-product of food waste, along with EcoVerde thread, and a recycled polyester fibre.

It is made from start to finish at Mulberry's carbon-neutral factory in Somerset and is part of the British luxury brand's “focus on creating a positive change and a sustainable legacy through the care and attention it takes in designing, sourcing and manufacturing each collection.”

In addition 100% of net proceeds from sales of the bag to the World Land Trust, an organisation which works to protect and sustainably manage natural ecosystems around the world.

Creative director Jonny Coca said of the new launch: “Our starting point for this family was the ultimate everyday item, the plastic bag – functional, but throwaway.

“The Portobello keeps the beautiful utility of this silhouette and elevates it into an elegant tote that is practical and, more importantly, made to last.”

The Portobello is now available on Mulberry's website and in-store priced at £795.
