M&S closes Glasgow city centre store to focus on 'right stores in right places'

Marks & Spencer is set to close its Glasgow’s Sauchiehall Street store at the end of April, lowering the shutters on 87 years of history as the retailer looks to invest in the "right stores in the right places".

The store, which is located in an Art Deco building and has been active since 1935, will shut its doors on 30 April 2022 after its closure was first announced in January.

David Bates M&S Regional Manager said the closure meant the retailer could invest in its other 12 Glasgow stores, including the nearby M&S Argyle Street "so we can keep up with the needs of our customers today and in the future."

He added that a transformation had been necessary because of "changing shopping habits".

Alternative roles for the majority of the M&S staff have been found, according to Bates, who also said that it is working to find a "complementary alternative use" for the space and is in discussion with a potential partner.

“We will keep the community updated on the progress of these developments,” he added.
