Monsoon celebrates 50th anniversary with launch of vintage pop-up on Portobello Road

Monsoon has today launched a vintage pop-up boutique at 237 Portobello Road in London, the road where it all began for the retailer with a market stall 50 years ago this month.

Monsoon Vintage will be running for three months and is carrying “quintessentially 70s Monsoon pieces”, such as quilted and embroidered skirt and top co-ords, bib-front dresses and vintage pieces from the likes of Gucci and Oscar de la Renta. Items range from £30-450, with the average price around £80.

It’s all been curated by stylist Bay Garnett, known as the ‘Queen of Thrift’ and formerly a contributing fashion editor for British Vogue and editor of Cheap Date magazine.

Monsoon Marketing Director, Jamie Coomber-Blunden, said: “50 years ago today, the Monsoon story began on Portobello. On this special anniversary, we have collaborated with Bay Garnett on a vintage pop-up which features beautiful pieces from Monsoon through the decades, as well as unique vintage finds from brands such as Pucci, YSL and Biba.

“We look forward to showcasing our finds to vintage fans, and showing how our past informs our future. Half a century on, Monsoon remains true to its free-spirited roots.”

Garnett commented: “Not many fashion retailers can celebrate 50 years in the business, that's why I am excited to be a creative collaborator on the Monsoon Vintage pop-up boutique. A love of vintage is in my DNA, so it’s been a joy to curate pieces that chart the fashion heritage of Monsoon through the decades.

“Trends come and go, but this singular and independent brand has remained committed to free-spirited style over five decades. Come to visit Monsoon Vintage boutique while it's here for a trip down Monsoon’s memory lane - and a good trip down other vintage lanes too - and the chance to find original, gorgeous pieces.”

The retro pop-up is fitted out with velvet armchairs and art and there are also Monsoon archive campaigns on display, including rare shoots with former James Bond actress Jane Seymour, who also features in a new special anniversary shoot.

In February, Monsoon launched ‘The Originals’, a collection drawing upon the fine fabrics and rich embroidery that started Monsoon, and this month the retailer released a collection of vibrant beach and casualwear made in partnership with students at the School of Design Technology and students at London College of Fashion, UAL.

A third anniversary collection will be released in May, and there will be ongoing special events and promotions for Monsoon customers in celebration of the 50th.
