Michael Kors and Rebecca Minkoff move towards "see now, buy now" model at NYFW

Michael Kors and Rebecca Minkoff are the latest designers to move towards the "see now, buy now" catwalk model at New York Fashion Week. The move comes after Burberry, Tom Ford and Tommy Hilfiger all announced they would all be transitioning their shows to consumer facing events focusing on the current season.

Michael Kors is due to show in New York on Wednesday and his collection will feature an eight-piece capsule of bags, shoes and ready-to-wear (a grey cashmere sweater with matching skirt) that will be available to buy immediately.  “My attitude is, she doesn’t pay attention to seasons anyway, so why not grab and go?” Kors told WWD of his customer.

On Saturday Rebecca Minkoff invited 150 of her customers to attend her #SeeBuyWear show that included current season stock. Minkoff has been a (positively) disruptive force in fashion. She announced the move to show current season stock in December, before Burberry and Tom Ford played their hand, and has been at the forefront of social media.

More brands are expected to follow suit, if not this season then next. The CFDA, which runs NYFW, has called in Boston Consulting Group to help advise it on how to shift the event towards a consumer-focused initiative. London Fashion Week recently revealed that its shows would be broadcast to 35m consumers around the country in a tie-up with Ocean Outdoor while some designers will show current season catwalks at London Fashion Weekend.
