Metallics, velvet and sparkles: Trends from the 2025 Oscars

Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez and Mikey Madison were among the best dressed at the Oscars 2025 - channelling sparkles, metallics and pink throughout their ensembles. Here are the top trends and looks from the red carpet...

Shimmer and sparkles

Ariana Grande wore a silk and sequin champagne gown on the Oscars red carpet. The American actress stepped out in a strapless Schiaparelli ball gown, with a silk bodice and diamond dripping tutu skirt.

Grande was nominated for best supporting actress for her role in Wicked, and in a nod to her on-screen persona Glinda, opted for a subtle champagne shade over a palpable pink. Her look set the trend among early arrivals for sparkle and shimmer on the red carpet.

Model Anok Yai mimicked the golden statue of the night itself, in a shimmering silk mermaid dress with a black feathered shawl by Italian fashion house Marni, bringing old-Hollywood glamour to the carpet.

Sister Act star Whoopi Goldberg wore a shimmering liquid-look navy gown by Christian Siriano, accompanied by silver diamond earrings.

Meanwhile, Jeff Goldblum's wife Emilie brought a colourful flair to the shimmering trend, sporting a bronze and silver encrusted dress.

French actress Stacy Martin wore a black and silver lace Louis Vuitton gown with a relaxed hoop skirt. The Brutalist star paired the gown with dripping diamond earrings, a matching necklace and ring.

Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres followed the dazzling black trend in a black Chanel couture sequin and lace gown with a sheer under skirt.

But some sparkles were more subtle than others. Zoe Saldana, wore a burgundy ruched satin-shine gown by Saint Laurent, with a high empire line and sheer black opera gloves. The actress won best supporting actress for her role in musical crime film Emilia Perez.

English comedian and presenter Amelia Dimoldenberg wore a baby blue Versace cut out gown with diamante detailing. She let the dress do the talking, going without jewellery except for some gold hoops.

Velvet

British actress Cynthia Erivo wore a deep velvet green gown by Louis Vuitton on the Oscars red carpet. The Wicked star wore a pluming ballgown with a high neck and pillowy off-the-shoulder sleeves.

Erivo was nominated in the best leading actress category for the musical film where she plays green witch Elphaba. It was apt for the star to sport bottle green in homage to her on-screen persona.

Actress Scarlett Johansson wore a rich navy velvet Thierry Mugler dress with matching opera gloves. Johannsson finished the luxe look with a diamond De Beers necklace and matching earrings.

In addition, The Substance star Margaret Qualley brought vintage vibes with a fitted black off-the-shoulder velvet dress, rom-com legend Meg Ryan donned a ruby red velvet column gown, and actress and comedian Amy Poehler went for a classic velvet long black dress.

Metallics

Demi Moore led a metallics fashion trend that dominated the Oscars red carpet. The Substance star, who was nominated for best actress in a leading role as Elisabeth Sparkle, wore a silver encrusted custom Armani Prive, with statement diamond earrings and a matching cuff.

The Brutalist star Felicity Jones, who was nominated for best supporting actress, followed suit in another Armani Prive, sporting liquid-look silver in a metallic, high neck, cut out silk gown.

Emilia Perez star Selena Gomez, who wore an ornate custom Ralph Lauren dress, inspired by old-Hollywood star Sophia Loren.

The actress’s off-the-shoulder dress was embellished with more than 16,000 glass droplets and Rosemont crystals – affixed by hand by 12 skilled artisans. Gomez brought added bling to the look with her accessories, wearing a collar necklace with a diamond drop pendant, alongside diamond earrings and a handful of rings.

Actress Emma Stone wore a slinky custom Louis Vuitton gown with a simple scoop neck and reflective metallic discs. The star showcased her new pixie cut once again, styling it into a 1920s Flapper bob.

Meanwhile, Halle Berry also sparkled in a metallic mirrored Christian Siriano gown – an American designer who was also worn by Whoopi Goldberg during the evening - and actress Goldie Hawn wore a shimmering gold strapless gown with a matching butter-yellow shawl.

Pink

Aside from Ariana Grande's light pink bodice, Anora star Mikey Madison - who was awarded best actress - channelled Grace Kelly in a silk pink and black column gown by Christian Dior. Madison finished the look with a polished up-do and a Tiffany & Co pendant necklace.

American singer Charlotte Lawrence wore a dusty pink Valentino gown encrusted with blush and gold diamantes with Gianvito Rossi shoes. The singer-songwriter channelled Valentino’s new kitsch aesthetic by pairing the dress with a cartoon kitten clutch.

Monica Barbaro, who was among the nominees for best supporting actress for her role in A Complete Unknown,  opted for a custom ballet-pink gown that featured a full skirt and sparkly, bedazzled top.

Other famous faces, like Brandi Carlile and Bowen Yang, accessorised with the colour, with the former adding a hot pink bow to her polka dot suit and the latter selecting it for his ruffled undershirt.
