Buy now pay later provider Klarna has revealed that over the past week sales of sunglasses have increased by almost 90%, with men shopping for shades up a massive 171% week on week – comparing 14-20 July with 7-13 July.

Women also upped their summer eyewear spend by 98.6% week on week as the temperature rose, while sales of bikinis shot up almost 80% - with demand in the South West rising 125% as people headed to the sunny shores of Devon and Cornwall for their sizzling summer staycations.

Klarna’s data suggests women have been marginally “more prepared for the hot spell”, as shorts sales for men increased by 97.7% against a 84.3% increase for women’s shorts.

The insight highlights the enthusiasm among Brits to get outside and enjoy the sun, not only while travel remains limited but also after 18 months of lockdowns and “pent up demand”.

Klarna is well positioned to give such insight, with over 14,400 merchant partners in the UK - analysing purchases made by its 15 million-plus customers in the UK.
