Collaboration is a powerful force, it’s the key to growth – and there’s been a fair bit of it going on in The Industry of late. Take the recent partnership between Mary Katrantzou and Tom Chapman of MATCHESFASHION.COM. The two members collaborated on an ‘A-Z’ handbag collection and the result has been PR gold, with celebrities all over the world photographed next to the tote that matches the first letter of their name.
However, while it’s hard to pick a favourite the latest member collaboration to hit The Industry’s editorial desk is pure genius. Acclaimed jewellery designer and member of The Industry, Sarah Angold has been tapped up by fellow member, Lauretta Roberts’ WGSN Global Fashion Awards to design the 2015 trophies – transforming the architectural geometry that Sarah is known for into an array of iconic skyscraper style trophies that both capture the spirit of the Global Fashion Awards and represent the rich international tapestry of the winners.
“When we first spoke with WGSN about this project, we wanted to understand how we could design a trophy that represented exactly what the WGSN Global Fashion Awards are about. That is, bringing together the most innovative and influential, rising and established fashion talent from across the globe,” explains Sarah. The Global Fashion Awards is the only initiative of its kind to honour fashion design from the four corners of the world, attracting entries from more than 50 countries. “We drew inspiration from the world’s fashion epicenters and, using iconic pieces of their skylines, created a fantasy building that captures the essence of each capital city.”
Handmade from acid etched steel with bespoke tinted laser cut acrylic, each trophy contains intricate layers held together with tiny industrial bolts and takes three weeks to fully construct. “I love the collision of hyper-modernity with artisanal craftsmanship,” adds Sarah. “By adapting industrial processes and combining them with meticulous hand assembly, we’re able to push the boundaries of design possibility.”
Entries will be judged by a panel of international experts including Sarah herself – and a host of other Industry members, namely our managing director Courtney Blackman, Caroline Burstein of Browns, Michael Herz of Diane von Furstenburg, Fashion Monitor’s Sarah Penny, famed illustrator Daisy de Villeneuve and Hannah White of Avery Dennison.
The WGSN Global Fashion Award winners will receive their ‘Global Fashion Skyscrapers’ at a star-studded gala ceremony at the Park Lane Hotel on May 14th 2015.
