McDonald's collaborates with Macdonald

Restaurant chain McDonald's has revealed an "unexpected" collaboration with high-end British fashion designer Julien Macdonald.

Macdonald, best known for his glamorous and highly embellished red carpet gowns, was commissioned by the chain to design a luxe burger box for its Signature Collection of gourmet burgers.

The designer lent some of his signature style to the Signature collection with a black box featuring crystal detailing, embellishment and a bespoke digital print, along with the iconic McDonald’s Golden Arches.

"I drew inspiration from my fashion creations and iconic embellished red carpet dresses. This was translated into a gold baroque crystal encrusted box, which is the perfect packaging for the luxury McDonald’s Signature Collection burger,” Macdonald said.

The design will be unveiled at McDonald's Leicester Square branch today and will be made in a limited edition run of 1,000, which will only be available at showcase events around the UK. One version of the box, decorated by Macdonald himself, will also be unveiled at Leicester Square, and opportunities will be explored to donate proceeds of its auction to the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC).

“This is our first ever UK packaging collaboration, it’s a brave and exciting move and it’s like nothing we’ve ever done before. To partner with such an iconic designer as Julien Macdonald is fantastic, and his beautifully designed star-studded box complements The Signature Collection perfectly," said McDonald's vice president of marketing Emily Somers.
