Ruth Chapman co-founder of multichannel luxury fashion retailer Matchesfashion.com has been shortlisted for the prestigious Veuve Cliquot Business Woman Award 2018.

Chapman, who established Matchesfashion.com with husband Tom 30 years ago, is one of two business women to be shortlisted this year; the other is Liz Garfield of Severn Trent Water who, at 42, is the youngest FTSE100 CEO. Chapman has been recognised for her ability to innovate in times of turmoil.

Matchesfashion.com was founded as a single boutique in Wimbledon Village in the mid-1980s and went on to become one of the world's most recognised luxury fashion retailers and etailers.

The business now has boutiques in some of London’s smartest neigbourhoods including Wimbeldon, Richmond upon Thames, Notting Hill and Marylebone. It moved into ecommerce in 2006 and its website now stocks around 400 brands and ships globally.

Lately it has been innovating with technology and logistics, such as launching a dedicated French language site and offering 90-minute deliveries within London; it will open a new London distribution centre near Heathrow this year. Last August it also announced it would be opening a 24,000 sq ft creative hub, housing a photography, video and editorial facility, at the Here East Studios as Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Tom and Ruth Chapman now have an advisory role to the business they founded (and remain shareholders in it) following a deal sealed last September to sell Matchesfashion.com to private equity house Apax for what was believed to be £800m.

The winner of the Veuve Cliquot Award will be revealed on 9 May. Past winners include luxury accessories designer Anya Hindmarch and the late architect Dame Zaha Hadid.
