Matchesfashion appoints former ASOS chief Nick Beighton as CEO

Matchesfashion, the luxury online fashion destination, has named former ASOS CEO Nick Beighton has its new CEO.

Beighton will be taking over at the London-based business from Paolo de Cesare, the former Printemps Group president who was appointed CEO just 10 months ago. De Cesare and Beighton will carry out a short handover period before the latter takes over.

Beighton had been CEO at online young fashion giant ASOS until standing down last October. ASOS recently announced his replacement, its former chief commercial officer José Antonio Ramos Calamonte.

During his time at ASOS Beighton helped grow the online retailer from £178m in revenues and 150 people when he started in 2009 (he was first CFO and became CEO in 2015) to £3.9bn of revenues and 15,000 people when he left in October 2021.

Prior to working for ASOS, Beighton was head of finance and executive board member at Matalan and has also been finance director of Luminar Plc. He is a member of the Tech Future Fifty Programme Advisory Panel, the Retail Sector Council and was recently announced as chairman of off-price platform Secret Sales.

Paolo De Cesare said of the move: “I am pleased with the progress we have made at Matchesfashion since I joined. The business is growing, we are strengthening relationships with our luxury brands and hiring some excellent new talent. I have enjoyed working with the talented team and wish Nick and the team the best for continued success.”

Beighton added: “I love fashion and e-commerce and have long been an admirer of Matchesfashion. It is a pioneer in the sector and has redefined the face of luxury shopping with its unique fashion perspective and distinct, curated edit. Starting from a single store in London 35 years ago it has become the go-to place for luxury fashion online, yet it still has huge potential. Using technology, product, logistics and culture, I have helped disrupt existing consumer patterns and galvanise change in organisations and I hope to bring these skills to my new role.

Matchesfashion is owned by investor Apax and was initially founded by Tom and Ruth Chapman as a single store in Wimbledon more than 30 years ago. Today it is a global luxury fashion force centred on its digital presence with an event space and broadcasting hub at 5 Carlos Place in Mayfair, and strategically located stores in London. Its sales to January 2021 were £392m.
