Matalan re-opens 15 sites as government relaxes rules on homewares stores

Matalan, the value fashion and home retailer, has re-opened 15 stores across the country after the Government relaxed non-essential retail rules to allow homewares stores to open from 18 May.

The company operates 230 stores in the UK and has started to emerge from lockdown with the opening of select sites in large outdoor retail parks with large car parks, which more readily allow for social distancing.

It has said it will only start to open stores which are standalone with car-parks for now; this would account for 168 of its stores. An opening date for those stores based in shopping centres or high streets has not yet been given.

New safety measures have been introduced in-stores such as PPE for staff, hand sanitiser and sanitiser for customers to clean baskets plus the closure of fitting rooms, cafes, toilets and baby nurturing rooms. Customer numbers will also be limited.

Those stores to have opened are:

  • Basildon
  • Bradford Green Gates
  • Bolton
  • Cortonwood
  • Darlington
  • Halifax
  • Leeds Halton
  • Luton
  • Milton Keynes
  • Osterley Park/Southall
  • Rotherham
  • Southport
  • Stockton
  • Truro
  • Walsall - North

A statement on the Matalan website reads: "With our new safety measures in place, we are extremely happy to be back serving families across England, and look forward to welcoming our customers back into stores, and our colleagues returning from furlough.

"We are extremely grateful to all of our colleagues for their huge efforts in caring for our customers and the business, and to our customers for their continued loyalty to Matalan."
