Marigay McKee, the former president of Saks Fifth Avenue and chief merchant of Harrods, has invested in contemporary womenswear brand Needle & Thread and joined its board.

Needle & Thread which specialises in embellished dresses and separates was founded by former All Saints womenswear design director Hannah Coffin in 2013. Coffin described McKee, who since her departure from Saks in 2014 has established MM Luxe Consulting, as the “Fairy Godmother of fashion”.

“Marigay nurtures designers and brands with inspirational guidance and passion. Her impeccable instinct for product is combined with sensitive and commercial advice,” said Coffin.

Needle & Thread is sold via its own website and since its launch has racked up an impressive roster of wholesale accounts, including NET-A-PORTER.COM, Asos, Harrods, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Zalando, Lane Crawford and Liberty.

The secret to its success is its high quality product design and construction offered at affordable prices. Full length dresses retail from around £185 to £550, with tops and skirts starting at £115. At the end of last year it unveiled an affordable and contemporary bridalwear line sold exclusively at its own website and on NET-A-PORTER.COM.

Before joining US group Saks Fifth Avenue as president in 2013 (she departed by mutual agreement just over a year later), McKee was chief merchant at Harrods - a business she had joined in 1998 - and was considered to be one of the world’s most influential fashion directors. Her career in fashion began in 1993 as a buyer for Fenwick.

Via MM Luxe Consulting, McKee works with brands and clients to deliver marketing, brand and merchandising strategy. Her portfolio extends to fashion, beauty and real estate, and she is an adviser to the Financial Times, the Related Real Estate in New York, and the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA). In addition, Marigay is on the board of LA-based beauty brand Violet Grey and New York brand Glamsquad. Needle & Thread is her first fashion investment.
