Marc Jacobs re-issues seminal Grunge collection to mark 25-year anniversary

Marc Jacobs is set to re-issue his famous Grunge collection from 1993, which he designed at the time for US house Perry Ellis and for which he was famously given the sack.

The SS93 collection, featuring spaghetti strap dresses, over-sized shirts, Birkenstocks, sneakers and Dr Marten boots, was first shown in 1992 in a show that starred models such as Carla Bruni and Kate Moss.

It was panned by critics who felt it was nothing short of an insult to send out everyday, downbeat clothes and sell them at designer prices. Jacobs was dismissed from the house but his vision was later vindicated when Grunge became the defining look of the 90s and he went on to establish his own, highly successful label which was influenced by the music and street scenes.

Jacobs has recreated 26 looks from the collection in their entirety including ready-to-wear, jewellery, shoes and accessories, all made in the original prints, fabrics and embroideries. The supporting campaign, this time featuring models of the moment Gigi Hadid and Dree Hemingway,  was shot by Juergen Teller.

Perry Ellis International has endorsed the move and congratulated Jacobs for his "first of its kind collection that changed the direction of contemporary womenswear."

Jacobs said of the decision to revive his seminal collection: "The 'Grunge' collection epitomized the first time in my professional career I was unwavering in my determination to see my vision come to life on the runway, without creative compromise."

The "Redux Grunge" collection will be available at marcjacobs.com and at select department stores and Marc Jacobs boutiques worldwide from 15 November.
