Mango to manufacture 13,000 gowns for healthcare workers

Mango has confirmed it will manufacture 13,000 disposable polyethylene gowns for healthcare teams to help in the fight against COVID-19.

The company has transformed its usual process of creating garment collections to a large-scale system to manufacture gowns, with more than 30 Mango employees working on the project at the company's facilities in Barcelona.

The initiative joins the list of actions Mango already carried out since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, including the donation of 2 million face masks to the Spanish Ministry of Health.

The Pablo Horstmann Foundation has been responsible for acquiring more than 30,000 metres of approved fabric for Mango, and will also be responsible for distributing the 13,000 gowns among hospitals, care homes and centres for the disabled, according to the greatest vulnerability and need.

In a statement the Barcelona-based company said: “Mango wants to acknowledge and thank, on behalf of its more than 15,000 employees, the extraordinary effort being made by all the people who are part of the health teams in Spain that are incessantly fighting COVID-19.”

In the UK, the fashion industry has been called up to help with the manufacture of essential items such as face masks and surgical gowns. The British Fashion Council and UKFT are helping to co-ordinate the effort. Details of how to offer support can be found on the UKFT website.
