Spanish fashion giant, Mango continues its development in becoming a completely sustainable fashion brand. The label has announced that by 2025, 100% of cotton used in its apparel will be sustainably sourced.

This latest pledge is the latest in a series of steps taken to show its commitment to becoming sustainable. In 2018 the brand vowed that 50% of cotton used would be sustainably sourced by 2022 and also joined the Better Cotton initiative. In May 2019, Mango introduced new techniques in the production of its SS19 season jeans and managed to reduce water consumption by up to 10 litres per garment.

By 2025, Mango aims to increase the usage of recycled polyester in its products and predicts that 50% of the polyester used will be recycled. Long term goals by the retailer include 100% of the cellulose fibres used are regulated.

Mango’s will continue with its Committed collection, a selection of environmentally committed designs, created with BCI certified cotton and sustainable fibres. The brand has been using recycled fabrics and sustainable fibres in designing this capsule of garments since 2017.  The capsule collection will now become a permanent collection, including all Mango clothes produced with sustainably sourced materials across different segments.

Toni Ruiz, CEO, said: “The goals that we have set for our collection stem from our firm intention to pursue Mango’s transformation into a sustainable label as the company’s strategic mainstay, something in which everyone who is part of the company is involved.”

MANGO is also continuing with its SECOND CHANCES project, a series of recycling containers for clothes and footwear located in stores. The clothes collected are sent for local reuse (52%), international reuse (10%), recycling for new functions (20%) and for energy generation (18%).

In 2019 Mango says it produced 18 million sustainably sourced products, double the number of the previous year. The Spanish brand has also introduced the Take Action environmental responsibility scheme and, in 2019 also signed up to the Fashion Pact, an international alliance of companies uniting to foster sustainability within the fashion world.
