Maison Margiela renews John Galliano contract

British designer John Galliano has renewed his contract with Maison Margiela where he has been creative director for five years.

Galliano, formerly creative director at Dior, was appointed by the avant garde house, which is owned by Renzo Rosso's OTB empire, in October 2014.

Under his stewardship the brand has grown its accessories business to 60% of its total sales and a new Maison Margiela fragrance, "Mutiny", developed in conjunction with licensing partner L’Oréal, hit the market in 2019.

In addition, a new retail concept is set to launch to support the worldwide retail development of the brand.

Central Saint Martins educated Galliano said: I am super excited for this new chapter and grateful to Renzo for his belief in me and the vision for Maison Margiela.”

Rosso added: "Five years ago I believed that John was the only person who could take this house in his hands, and I am even more convinced of this today. John’s undisputed talent is only matched by his understanding of today’s generations, their way of thinking, their struggles, their dreams. And he is doing exactly what this Maison always did at its best – disrupt, innovate and inspire."

OTB, formerly Only The Brave, became the major shareholder in Maison Margiela back in 2002. The Italian group is also the parent of Diesel, Marni and Viktor + Rolf; it also has a minority stake in Amiri.
