London Fashion Week Pick: RIXO X House of Christian Lacroix

At just four years old, contemporary womenswear brand RIXO has already established its place as a go-to brand for print and surprising colour combinations. For London Fashion Week, it not only took its inspiration from the King of print and colour, Christian Lacroix, but had the privilege to delve into his archive to create a limited edition capsule collection that goes on sale straight away.

As expected the collection was a riot of colour with print combinations that shouldn't work but somehow do, with clashing florals on tiered dresses, polka dots paired with psychedelic prints, checks paired with micro dots, and rhubarb and custard hued ombres (and, while this collection had a vintage feel, it still managed to incorporate the colour of the moment as denoted by Pantone, bright blue) all paired with vintage Lacroix jewels and bags, and specially commissioned Manolo Blahnik footwear.

It all felt very over the top and 80s, especially the shorter hemlines and the inclusive casting (models were street cast or drawn from RIXO's customer base). As well as the print and colour, RIXO has been at the forefront of the longer, floatier skirt movement that has dominated for several seasons but there were tweed mini skirt suits (one in a green houndstooth which is a key trend for SS20 and beyond) and a short blue silk dress with a jewel-embellished neckline that suggested fashion was ready to move on, or at least offer an alternative to midi and ankle lengths (though there were plenty of those).

In a bid to be sustainable, this collection is available in strictly limited quantities with only 50 of each piece made, with sizes ranging from UK6-16, from RIXO, Browns and the Galeries Lafayette concept store on the Champs Elysees.

Henrietta Rix, Co-founder of RIXO said: "At just four years into RIXO, it’s amazing to see how open and forward-thinking our favourite historic fashion house is to collaborating with an emerging contemporary brand. It was a dream come true when we saw the email hit our inbox (literally sent shivers up our spine!) – we screeched with excitement and set up a coffee date with the team immediately. The beauty of not having investors and being female founders is that we can follow our instincts – when we’re passionate about something and know in our gut it’s right, we jump in head first and go straight to work. It’s been the biggest pinch me moment of RIXO so far."

Orlagh McCloskey, Co-founder added: "Both Henrietta and I have always been obsessed with Christian Lacroix. On our vintage hunting trips in Paris the best pieces we’d find and love the most would always be Lacroix. Being let loose in the House of Christian Lacroix archive in Paris to delve into the true history and DNA of the brand was awe-inspiring. The Lacroix DNA is so in tune with RIXO’s – their vibrant visual prints and their completely individual and empowering viewpoint on style- it felt natural to collaborate. We’re so proud of what we have been able to create together!"

Was it fabulous? Absolutely...
