Liberty to close its doors for at least three weeks

Liberty, the iconic London department store, is to close its doors for at least three weeks due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic.

The mock Tudor store was opened in 1924, though Liberty has had a store on Regent Street since 1875, and will close from 5pm tomorrow, its CEO Adil M Khan has said.

"As a business we remain optimistic, we know this moment will pass, but we are neither complacent nor naïve. We know we need to make our contribution to dissuade people from moving and protect our staff and our customers," he said.

The store's e-commerce business will remain operational with delivery currently offered for free throughout the UK.

It is widely expected that London will be placed on stricter lock-down measures from this weekend as the Government moves to halt the spread of the virus, which is most prevalent in the capital.

Many retailers have already shut up shop, including other landmark department stores Fenwick and Selfridges. Most retailers are suggesting they will be closed at least until the end of March with some simply saying the doors will be shut "until further notice".

Thus far Prime Minister Boris Johnson has held off a mandated shut-down of non-essential retail stores and hospitality & leisure destinations, but in the capital at least this is expected to happen. Earlier this week Johnson strongly advised against socialising and yesterday he revealed that schools would be closing from tomorrow.
