Lauretta Roberts To Host Industry Event

The Industry London
02 July 2015

Industry advisor, founder and director of Creative Futures and the WGSN Global Fashion Awards, Lauretta Roberts will return to the stage of the Condé Nast College of Fashion & Design to head up what promises to be another insightful talk for our quarterly Network & Expert event.

On July 22nd, Lauretta will lead a conversation between two of fashion's instrumental women, former i-D editor, Caryn Franklin and iconic model, Daphne Selfe. What all three speakers have in common is an undying love for change and their respective groundbreaking work in the industry, prompting Lauretta to investigate into the current state of fashion in the UK and how it is being shaped for the future. It is undeniable that the British fashion landscape would not be where it is today without the help of trailblazing personalities who have all contributed in making London a leading fashion capital, always looking to push boundaries a little further.

Caryn Franklin will speak at The Industry on July 22nd

As a journalist, editor and filmmaker, Caryn Franklin has interviewed the full gamut of leading design talent, amongst them Georgio Armani, Yves St Laurent, Marc Jacobs, Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and John Galliano. Today, she works with emerging designers promoting awareness of body image, an influence that has begun to make changes on the catwalk and in advertising. Caryn has been overturning the standardised image of models and unhealthy practices. In 2009, she co-founded All Walks Beyond the Catwalk to encourage change in representation of race, age and size in fashion across the UK and North America.

Daphne Selfe is one of the world’s most recognised models whose career peaked at the wonderful age of 70. Breaking the mould, Daphne, represented by Models 1, has become the go-to advanced model of her generation. Although her modelling career began in 1950, her big break only came at the age of 70, when she was cast as a catwalk model for the Red or Dead catwalk show at London Fashion Week. Daphne has since become an iconic figure, a poster girl for a generation that doesn’t want to simply fade quietly into innocuousness.

Daphne Selfe, the longest-working model in the world, will speak at The Industry' Network & Expert event.

Industry advisor Lauretta Roberts will question Caryn and Daphne on the role of nonconformism in breaking the status quo. Is a little rebellion necessary to fashion's progress? Can change really be achieved in an industry that is beset with ethical problems? Paving the way for more questions, more changes and a brighter future, we are expecting great things from this one seminal conversation between three of our fashion industry's great change agents. Let's allow newcomers to break the mould in a relatively free and unfettered environment, gradually making fashion more diverse, more professional and at the end of the day, a better industry to be a part of.
