Footwear and accessories retailer Kurt Geiger has confirmed plans to reopen a small number of stores from 1 June, if lockdown relaxation plans continue.

The high street chain has been temporarily closed in line with Government lockdown rules, with plans set to reopen between 10 and 20 branches after carrying out a health and safety assessments on every location.

To protect its customers and teams and keep all stores as safe as possible from potential risks of COVID-19, Kurt Geiger has drawn up new health and safety procedures to adhere to in its stores.

The company said it will cost the brand an additional £75,000 per store this year to operate.

Shoppers will still be allowed to try on shoes but will be asked to wear disposable pop-socks provided by the retailer, or their own socks, and using antibacterial gel (which will be available in stores) will be compulsory for people trying on shoes.

Kurt Geiger, Chief Executive, Neil Clifford, said in a statement: “Whilst we are obviously very keen to re-open our stores and return to serving our customers across the country, the health and safety of our teams and customers is our number one priority.

“As such, we will implement new health and safety procedures in all reopened stores which adhere to government guidelines and still allow for an enjoyable shopping experience.”

The various safety measures in store include:

  • All stores will have a maximum COVID-secure capacity, allowing one customer per 15 sq metres of space, doubling the guidelines from the government.
  • Social distancing of 2 metres must be observed at all times.
  • Increased frequency of hand washing will be encouraged, with back-of-house signage and prompts for staff.
  • Anti-viral cleaning solutions will be used continually throughout the day to clean all surfaces to the highest standards, with particular attention to frequently used devices.
  • Perspex screens will be installed at all cash desks.
  • Only card payments will be accepted, with contactless payments being strongly encouraged when possible.
