King Charles will support British tailors of Savile Row during Coronation

Kings Charles III is backing British craftsmanship and opting for Savile Row tailors to create his Coronation outfits.

The Monarch is expected to arrive at the abbey wearing a Royal Navy military suit made by Master Tailor Malcolm Plews. Plews, otherwise renowned as ‘the best cutter on Savile Row’, has been responsible for making King Charles’ military uniforms for the past four decades and holds a Royal Warrant.

A source told the Daily Mail: "The idea is that the King arrives as a pauper and leaves as a crowned King and the clothes enable that transformation. That’s why we will notice the King change outfits during the service."

For the anointing, the King will wear a silk undershirt made by Turnbull & Asser. The collars and cuffs will be hand-embroidered with acorns and oak leaves. The garment has been made in Gloucestershire using English homespun silk.

Gaziano & Girling, also situated on London's Savile Row, has reportedly been called upon to create ‘opera pumps’ for the King to wear on Coronation day. Made by hand, the slippers have been crafted in Northampton using Swiss calf leather. The sole leather comes from a tannery in Devon that uses historical production methods.

Savile Row trainee tailors will also be responsible for sewing a mile of sustainable wool bunting around Mayfair and St James to mark King's Coronation. It will parade several streets including Clifford Street, Burlington Street and Savile Row itself.

Anda Rowland, Chair of Savile Row Bespoke, commented: "Savile Row has had a very long relationship with The Royal Household.

"To celebrate The Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III, the cutters and tailors put their skills to work to create bespoke woollen bunting from remnant Melton cloth from Hainsworth - a British mill with a remarkable heritage across the decades and especially with the military uniforms."
